In Finland and Sweden for example you cant turn off the subtitles on most of the movies. Can anyone tell me the reason behind this? The subtitles are not hard coded, there is just no option for None. The nordic countries understand English very well. Better than most other European countries, so I dont get why they force subtitles on us even tough most people dont need them.

I know this is old, but I discovered a work around for this. So here is what you do. If you select the native language of the country for the audio, so for example in mexico, most titles have the option for the audio to be played dubbed in spanish. If you switch the audio to spanish an option comes up to turn off the subtitles. So, switch the audio to the countries native language and make sure to let it reload with the new audio THEN switch it back to ENGLISH audio, and THEN while it is reloading with the new audio, quickly switch it back to the countries native language and turn off the subtitles. If you switch it before the load completes the audio will play in English and you will be able to disable the subtitles because the audio selection is set to the native language. I do this on my Xbox. I would assume it would work on other devices as well. Hope this helps.

Takes a little practice, but this works on PC too

Wow! A big thumbs up if that really works!

Ive noticed that Netflix is allowing you to turn subtitles off on a lot more films now. For example, Iron Man never had subtitles that could be disabled on Netflix Brazil, but you can disable them now. You can disable the Star Trek (2009) subtitles now…

When googling this problem, this post comes up as the first result, and this is a simple, well explained solution that works like a charm. This is why i love reddit. Have all my upvotes sir, which unfortunately is only one.

Funny, this is exactly what I just did!

Cant get the workaround to work on Roku on Mexican Netflix – or am I just too slow?

The missing off button for subtitles is making it virtually impossible to watch movies/documentaries that have hard-coded subtitles within the movie itself, on which Netflix then overlays their own subtitles. Im trying to watch the Senna documentary. The narration is in English, but whenever there is Italian audio, the movie itself includes English subtitles. I am then forced to view either Spanish or Portuguese subtitles on top of the English subtitles, making it impossible to read either.

The answer straight from Netflix ishere

However, there are some titles where we were only able to license the movie or show with subtitles embedded. Unfortunately this is not up to us.

Ultimately, Netflix is only allowed to broadcast what the content or license owner allows them to broadcast. If the owner says it needs subtitles, Netflix needs to put on subtitles. If the owner says it needs to be displayed upside down, Netflix needs to display it upside down. If the owner says is can be HD on the PS3 but not the XBOX….. you get the idea…

This is one of the more retarded things Ive ever heard in my life. Not your explanation, but the actual reason. Licensing shit with subtitles only, what kind of fucking world are we living in?

6 points7 points8 points4 years ago(0 children)

because their own content cant have subtitles off, i was about to watch one of their new exclusive series called Arrested Development and even on this one i can not turn off the subtitles.

And this is their own content, therefore they can do whatever they want with it, they are the boss. Which basically means they are fucking liars fooling the customer blaming someone else when is actually their systems fault.

i cant believe i just read this shit. ohhhhhh it is so ridiculous netflix, u know what after this im gonna unsub, fuck them.

fuck this shit im back to my torrents

2 points3 points4 points4 years ago(0 children)

Mexico and Brazil have the same problem. I keep hoping someone will put out a greasemonkey script or something to get around it but I havent see
n anything like that yet.

At least when it comes to watching on a computer I found a pretty easy way to turn the subs off. Here is what you have to do:

Create a .txt-file and change it to .dfxp. Name it every way you want. The result could be NoSubs.dfxp for example.

Start the movie/TV show you want to watch.

Hold Shift+Alt (for Mac Shift+Opt) and left click an the screen. That should bring up the Diagnostics if not try full screen mode.

Go to Load Costum DFXP File.

Load your empty dfxp-file and the subs should be gone.

Sweet! Works great. Is there a major drawback to this or something? Since youre being downvoted I mean. Anyway, Thanks.

2 points3 points4 points4 years ago(4 children)

None that I know of. It could be that I downvoted myself. Dont know if thats a thing… I am a newbie to Raddit and did a bit of clueless clicking on the post in the beginning… I simply responded to the last post of cause, so maybe thats the reason why my post looks like as if it has been downvoted? Anyway, glad I could help.

Actually, your instructions are only half right. .dfxp uses the .xml file format. So create an empty file with the latter extension, then resave as .dfxp . Just tested it. Perfect!

(On a Mac, create as above, but Get Info on the file in the Desktop. This is the only way to edit the file extension so it sticks.)

Thanks for putting me on the right track!

5 points6 points7 points4 years ago(2 children)

Im happy it worked for you, but tbh I dont get your point about the first part. We are not trying to create functional subs here. The only thing that matters is that Netflix can see the file. That is true for .dfxp and .xml both. If you wanted to create a .dfxp file that actually works (which apparently is possible) than I could see your point.

-1 points0 points1 point4 years ago(1 child)

I never said anything about creating a file that actually had subtitles in it. Anybody following YOUR instructions on their Mac would have hit a brick wall. With my instructions, I just saved a lot of people some grief. So the first half of your tutorial is of no value to Mac users, but the second half (shift-option-click when in Netflix) is bang on.

0 points1 point2 points4 years ago(0 children)

I followed Abyss_85s instructions on my mac and it worked fine. I just renamed the .txt file in the finder to .dfxp

0 points1 point2 points4 years ago(0 children)

Shut up! Im not going back to netflix! 😛

0 points1 point2 points4 years ago(0 children)

This is great. Will the subs come back when you refresh the page? Or watch something else with subs?
